Graduates: Standing Out In the Crowd

Graduation is fast approaching! For those of you who are graduating it is time to set yourself up with career opportunities if you have not already done so. First and foremost, it is imperative that you do your homework on jobs that interest you. Gather information on the organization’s website, for example, which can be invaluable when it comes to an interview. For instance, if an employer asks you; “Why do you want to work for us”? You could reply by saying that I understand that you have been established since 1973 and have retained 90% of your customer base, which struck a chord with me and showed me your longevity and stability. It shows the potential employer that you have done your homework and you can take pride in yourself that you have done so. Remember you have the opportunity to manage the interview. Make sure to ask questions. Many employers will ask you if you have any questions for them near the end of the interview. Asking questions that you really want to know conveys to the potential employer that you are taking the initiative and care about what the organization stands for and has to offer. Do not just ask questions just to ask, because employers can see through the smoke and mirrors. After all if you are hired, you are the one who has to deal with the questions that you do not ask, so pose your questions carefully!

Continuing Students: Staying on Track

Now is the time to start setting yourself up for job opportunities. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Start out by researching internship opportunities in your field(s) of interest. Attend networking events! When events are taking place on campus make sure you make every effort to attend. Create a dialogue with your professor’s as a networking tool for career avenues and contacts! Heh…there right here for you to initiate contact with! You don’t know unless you ask! Make contacts with alumni to connect with students from your school, many of whom may have had the same classes as yourself. Check with them not only in your field but other fields to see what their jobs entail. The summer is fast approaching and now is the time to set yourself up. It often takes several months to set up an internship. When you are home on break, research job fairs, network opportunities in your area, and work on your resume! They are numerous sites that can help you with a resume. Don’t just wait to hear about opportunities. Being proactive is the name of the game. Also get involved in your campus community. For example, participating in clubs, sports, student government, and volunteer. Employers want to see that you are multi-faceted and not just one dimensional. Remember your going to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree just like countless thousands of others students. You must set yourself apart from the others!
