EOP Family Barbecue2006: How It All Came Together

On Friday September 1, 2006, EOP had its fall barbecue to welcome its students back to campus.  The annual event is an opportunity for students and staff to come together and enjoy good food and fun activities.

Throughout the park, students were playing volleyball, basketball, or engaged in good conversation.  There was definitely a family atmosphere in the air.  This particular point was noted by the introduction of the   Electric Slide

Unfortunately, many of my male contemporaries failed to show their stuff on the dance floor.  EOP Program Director Gary Owens stepped up to represent the males of EOP.  With his hat to the back and his   swagger tight, he displayed moves that brought delight and smiles to those in attendance.  In that moment, he proved once again that, “there is a method to his madness.”

Many students were just happy to see their old friends and counselors.  Everyone was eager to get reacquainted.  Amanda Clarke could not have agreed more.  “I think the picnic was a good idea because it brings us all back together” said the EOP freshman.  Fellow EOP Summer Program Alum, Rod Wilson, was eager to get the party started.  “I’m happy to be back!  I’m going to find out what the upper classmen are doing and how their EOP experience has been so far” Rod commented.

Like Al Pacino realized in The Godfather 3, once you’re in, you’re in.  The same applies to EOP.  Former EOP counselors Suzanna Wesh, Leonard Brock, and Yara Castillo came to support the program and its students.  Their presence demonstrated how strong the EOP bond truly is.

None of this would have been possible without the exploits of Ana Veras and Mark Guthrie.  Anna was not surprised by the great turn out.  “Me and Mark… organized?  It was ill!” remarked the senior counselor.  Enough said.  Their hard work and vision made the event a success.  Also, thank you to Alpha Phi Fraternity Inc., Sisters of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad, and ALAS.  Their commitment to the EOP Program and its students made all the difference.

In closing, I have to mention David Beauchamp.  By his own volition, he decided to create a belt buckle that said, “EOP: We Are Family,” which he wore to the picnic   His act of appreciation is another example of the powerful impact this program continues to have on all of us.
