Career Corner Extras

Many of you are planning to enter the job market in the near future. You may feel as though you are well prepared. You have your bachelor’s degree and the book smarts of 100 women/men. However, there is one thing that you must have in hand: courtesy.

Remember how your Mom told you to say “please” and “excuse me?” To look a person in the eye when you shake their hand or during a conversation? These are the kind of things that people remember, especially, potential employers. The degree gets you into the interview. It is the person you are that lands the job.

Employers hire people they like. Simple as that. So you have 120 credits in nuclear physics. Excellent! But your clothes are wrinkled, you smell like cigarettes, and you end every sentence with “um” or “like, uh.” If so, then you lose.

Your verbal and written communication skills help you stand out amongst the 1000 recent graduates whom you are competing with. E-mails to employers about job inquiries should not read like a text message to your homeboy/girl. When applying for jobs, your voicemail greeting should not sound like a DJ Green Lantern Mix Tape. Keep this in mind during your job searches and good luck! You can dooo iiittt!
