Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration: La Hora De Diversion

On October 18, 2006, the Educational Opportunity Program culminated Hispanic Heritage Month with their Hispanic Heritage Celebration. As with every EOP gathering, everyone in attendance had a great time! The purpose of the event was to commemorate the accomplishments and contributions of key figures throughout Hispanic culture. Various types of Latino dishes were served in order to display the richness and diversity of the culture.

Students and staff were able to interact with each other while indulging in the delicious food available. EOP junior and transfer student, Brittany Granville, thought the celebration was a wonderful idea and looks forwards to similar events in the future. “I had a good time,” said Brittany. “All you had to say was food and I’m there!” She particularly enjoyed the piñata activity. “It was fun watching everybody interact and have fun. All of us running to get the candy.”

Some students were a little perturbed with the faulty piñata. “The piñata game was fun, even though the piñata didn’t break properly. There was too much candy in the piñata, the bag could not break for nothing… could not break the plastic… I don’t know,” remarked Terrence Harris.

Some even thought that it might be wise to save the piñata from unwarranted abuse. “Well, once the piñata fell on the ground I had to take it away… I was trying to protect it!” said EOP counselor, Margery Poon. Unfortunately, during the chaos she was unable to grab her favorite candy. “And all I wanted was an almond joy! But Brittany got me one, so I’m all set, ha, ha.” Good looking Brittany! Welcome to the family!

The smooth, melodic sounds from the hottest in salsa and Latin music kept the party moving. Anthony Molina took time out to show some of us how to Salsa. Let’s just say that some of us learn faster than others.

EOP sophomore, Christina Douglass, enjoyed herself as well. “The food was good, the rice and beans were good. I was able to see a lot of people that I don’t get to see on campus.”

Thank you to Latasha Craig and Ana Veras for bringing this event to life. To all those who attended or brought food, thanks for making the celebration a wonderful success!
