Train of Thought

By: Stefan McDonald

Dear Family,

I walk this campus every day and I see you. Sometimes we pass each other in Neff Hall. I realize in my mind that you are present, but it seems like your mind and heart is being pulled in so many directions. Who would have thought that college would be this tough? It is during these moments of struggle and adversity that I see your true character.

I feel for you, too. College can be complicated and emotionally draining. It does not matter how old you are either, 17 or 36. The grind of college is real for all of us. Conversing with professors who do not seem to hear you completely. You grit your teeth and you “suck-it-up” because you are tough. I will not tell you not to be scared, if you are. I’ll just say that I see you trying your hardest, and I admire your courage.

I’ll admit, it is hard to concentrate when the subject matter is not the most exciting. You try not to sleep, but sometimes you do. You cannot help it. You even try to take notes, splash your face with water, anything. Do not think that I am disappointed in you. Just try your hardest and know that I believe in you.

It has to be hard to concentrate on your studies after breaking up with your boyfriend/girlfriend. The last thing you probably care about is online quizzes or grade reports on Angel. I know it hurts. I can see that you are trying to hold it together. I will not even tell you that, “I’ve been there.” I just want you to know that I care about you and I got your back if you need me.

I wrote this to you because I see you. You are fighting to make it and I respect that. School, jobs, kids, family, money: Whatever it is. Keep pushing because you are almost there. I wrote you this letter because we are family. I wanted you to know that you are not alone. No matter what happens, we will always be family.

Sincerely,
Stef
