Welcoming a Familiar Face to the Family
The 2007 spring semester is here and a new and exciting year has begun. As I have been afforded the prospect of becoming a graduate counselor in the Educational Opportunity Program, I want to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Sandra S. Vazquez and I, too, was an EOP student. I attended and graduated from Brockport with a BS in psychology and currently am in pursuit of my graduate degree in counselor education, also at Brockport. In reference to a little background of myself, I was born and raised in Rochester, New York, and graduated from Ben Franklin High School. I come to my newly found family in EOP as a former Youth Advocate and more recently a Project Coordinator for juniors and seniors in five of the Rochester area schools through Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection. I am eager to utilize my experience and take on new endeavors that will allow me to stretch personally and professionally.
As a former EOP student, I understand the struggles and barriers that come with academics. But most importantly, I can appreciate the support that was provided to me by my counselor through and beyond my time at Brockport. Because I can understand how vital it is to have the support of others while traveling through one’s academic journey, I want to extend the same support to all of you. It is important to me that every student I work with recognizes their own barriers and understands what resources they have at hand. It is in this capacity that I wish to assist and help you all to grow personally and succeed academically. If I can encourage a bit of wisdom, it would be to always be present in the moment and remember to notice. It is within those details that stand within time that the opportunities of self-reflection lie.
I look forward to meeting with all of you.
Sandra S. Vazquez
