EOP Awards Banquet 2007

The Educational Opportunity Program held its 28 th Annual Honors and Recognition Banquet on Saturday, April 21 in the Seymour College Union Ballroom. The event was both magical and memorable with the performances, speakers and the superior dinner; all in all it was a night to cherish.

Among the speakers were Ms. Claire VanDenBerghe, interim vice-president of enrollment management and student affairs and Dr. Christine E. Murray, dean of school of professions who shared words about the importance of being able to be there to celebrate student success and to also wish all students, especially graduates, the best of luck in their futures.

Lydia Amankwah (junior nursing student) stated, “Yes it’s (the banquet) important because we work really hard and sometimes it feels good for someone to show their appreciation. It’s like they appreciate you and it makes you feel good about yourself.”

Jeremiah Kirkland received the S enior S cholar A ward. He encouraged the underclassmen to work hard and they, too, could one day be the senior scholar.

SUNY Brockport faculty Roby Kessler from The Office of Student Accounts and Kathy Ashbury from the Financial Aid Office were also recognized for their commitment to EOP.

Raquel Thompson received the M ost I mproved GPA award. As a young mother and full-ti m e student, she announced to the crowd that if she can succeed they can too .

Amanda Soliday received the Adult Student Award. She is a courageous woman who has been through some amazing difficult times. S he is truly a survivor who refuses to be held down.

The banquet was also somewhat sad in the sense that we will be losing two of our beloved staff. Ana Veras and Mark Guthrie will be moving on in their careers. EOP Director Gary Owens acknowledged them for their commitment to the program and its students.

Gary Owens also spoke about the need for EOP to give back to the community. Justin Oliver remarked that “It’s important to give back because this program has done so much for me. It’s just good to give back to a program that really helped us.”

In the end, Director Gary Owens, presented Terry Stymus with a special award for her dedication to the program; and recognized Latasha Craig for her skills as project supervisor of the banquet and Andrea Rodriguez for the hard work that it took for her to coordinate the banquet. She almost shed a couple of tears, but her beat-red face took the attention… the crowd laughed!!

Thank you to all those who attended and assisted with the banquet!
