Tri-State Conference
From April 15–18, 2007, EOP staff attended The 9th Biennial Tri-State Consortium of Opportunity Programs Conference. At the Conference, Latasha Craig and Andrea Rodriguez conducted a workshop entitled “The Importance of a Mandatory Pre-Freshman Summer Program ‘Building the Future One Summer at a Time.’” EOP Director Gary Owens, Mark Guthrie, and Sandra Vasquez presented on “The EOP Freshman Structure Year Program: A Retention Model for Facilitating First year Success.” Barbara LeSavoy also assisted with the creation of this presentation. Ana Veras and Stefan McDonald gave a workshop on “Academic Planning Seminar: Self, College and Career.”
SUNY Brockport’s EOP is truly innovative in their program design and student approach as many of our colleagues were interested in our program design and inquired about our program in general.
The Tri-State Conference was a powerful experience for everyone involved. It was invigorating to be in the same place with so many people who are committed to one cause: the empowerment of disadvantaged youth.
Arthur O. Eve , founder of Higher Educational Opportunity Programs throughout New York, brought to light the severity of the situation regarding education. He stated, “the Black male is an endangered species.” He went on to say that this “is the worst crisis since slavery because even during slavery everyone had jobs.” He challenged us to get into the schools and connect with churches so that we can educate and, in the process, save the next generation. He concluded by saying that now is not the time to sit in our offices and be content. We should not expect young people to find us. We will go to them.
