Educational Opportunity Program

On Friday November 7, 2008, the Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society, Epsilon Rho Chapter and the Arthur O. Eve Opportunity Program at the College at Brockport inducted 37 chartering members.  The inductees participated in a private induction ceremony earlier that day, with the assistance of the EOP Director of the College at Oneonta; National Deputy Office Honorable Lynda Bassette, EOP Director of SUNY New Paltz; Honorable Antonio Bonilla, EOP Academic Coordinator; Honorable Sophea So, and EOP student; Honorable Bridgena Willis.

With over 100 guests in attendance, Dr. Kathryn Wilson, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs welcomed the crowd with words of encouragement. The Honorable NYS Senator Antoine Thompson, who was also inducted, served as the keynote speaker.  The Honorable NYS Senator Antoine Thompson is a graduate of the State University of New York College at Brockport, and is an alumnus of EOP.

Later in the program, National Deputy Office Honorable Lynda Bassette presented the EOP Director, the Honorable Gary Owens with the charter.  Shortly after, each inductee’s names were called up to the stage so that they could participate in the “signing of the charter” and receive their “key”.   Pinners included parents, grandmothers, husbands, daughters, best friends, coaches, directors and faculties who traveled as far as Staten Island, New Jersey and New York City.  Students, staff members from undergraduate admissions, financial aid, CSTEP/McNair, Leadership and Development, Women & Gender Studies as well as Mr. Scott Atkinson; Interim Assistant V P of Enrollment Management, Mrs. Leah Barrette; Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs were all in attendance to witness the induction of the founding members of the Epsilon Rho Chapter of Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society.

Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society is a national organization founded at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and was organized in 1989. XAE at The College at Brockport was recently chartered in 2008 with two primary goals: to formally recognize the outstanding academic achievement of EOP students; and to motivate current and future EOP students to strive for high academic goals.

Chi Alpha Epsilon was formed to recognize the academic achievements of students admitted to colleges and the universities through non-traditional criteria.  Its purposes are to promote continued high academic standards, to foster increased communication among its members, and to honor academic excellence achieved by those students.

Students are eligible for this membership if they have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher for the last two consecutive semesters.

We encourage you to visit the Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society website at www.xaehonor.com to learn information about this organization.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Sophea So, XAE Advisor at (585) 395-5411 or sso@brockport.edu.
