TO: Campus Community
FROM: Better Community GICD Committee
RE: Call For Proposals To Meet Better Community Objectives of Global Interdependence and Cultural Diversity

The Better Community Committee is seeking proposals from faculty, staff (including Classified Service, BASC, and Research Foundation) and students to initiate scholarly and artistic events that will have a broad impact on our mission, curriculum, faculty and staff development, student leadership and the teaching and learning environment at the College. Programs should be open to the campus community and held at a SUNY Brockport facility. Programs that have received support in the past have met the following goals:

1. Provide a major forum for intellectual activities that will challenge our College and community, and encourage the campus and external community to engage in dialogue about the issues of diversity in our society and the interdependence of national entities and people,

2. Affirm the College's commitment to preparing our students for leadership in a world of diverse people and interests,

3. Promote our campus as a community of respect and tolerance for differences based upon knowledge and shared experiences, and

4. Value critical and informed dialogue that gives responsible and careful regard for the feelings and sensitivities of others.

The Better Community GICD Awards' primary focus will be on funding new initiatives that meet one or more of the above objectives and which have a broad impact on the Brockport campus community. The Committee especially encourages proposals for events that are co-sponsored by one or more organizations or departments. Priority will be given to proposals that have written commitments of financial support from other sources. Application packets that are complete and present a comprehensive action plan to develop, execute and evaluate the proposed event will receive the Committee's most serious attention. The average award in past years has been approximately $1,800.

Deadlines for grants for 2006-07 are: August 28, 2006; October 2, 2006; February 12, 2007; April 16, 2007. Decisions and notifications will be made approximately three weeks after applications are due.

Guidelines and forms are attached. If you have questions or concerns please call Colleen Donaldson, Academic Affairs, who is providing staff support to the committee. She can be reached at (585) 395-5118 or by e-mail at cdonalds@brockport.edu.

We encourage members of the campus community to become involved in this effort through initiating events that will assist all of us in meeting the College's mission of preparing students for leadership roles in a world of diverse people and interests.
