Teaching and Learning Day 8:30 am - 4 pm Cooper New York Room The College at Brockport Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) will host the fifth annual "Teaching and Learning Day" on Wednesday, January 23 from 8:30 am - 4 pm in the New York Room, Cooper Hall with breakfast and lunch provided. The event will feature presentations by Brockport faculty on techniques, ideas, and reflections related to teaching and learning. The keynote speaker is Dr. Maryellen Weimer, Emeritus Professor of Teaching and Learning at Penn State Berks, editor of the Teaching Professor Newsletter, and author of many books on college teaching and learning. The topic of both her presentations is "Overcoming Resistance to Learner-Centered Teaching." RESISTANCE: Dealing with the Response of Students to Learner-Centered Teaching A move in the direction of learner-centered instructional approaches does not always engender student enthusiasm. Sometimes the reaction is just the opposite: students want to go back to the comfortable, predictable way things used to be! They accuse teachers of not doing their job. This interactive session will explore the reasons students resist, how that resistance manifests itself in the classroom and responses that diminish this negative reaction. RESISTANCE: Dealing with the Response of Colleagues to Learner-Centered Teaching A move in the direction of learner-centered instructional approaches does not always engender enthusiasm from colleagues either. They worry that approaches like these pander to students, reinforcing the ideas of educational consumerism. Any time students are engaged and involved, content isnít covered as quickly and colleagues find that a concern, especially if they teach the next course in a sequence. When students arenít well prepared or motivated, colleagues question whether itís ethically responsible to let students make decisions about learning. Are these legitimate objections? Can they be answered? Both questions will be the focus of this interactive session.
