A Scholarship to Support Dance Students
Dr. Darwin Prioleau, dean of the School of The Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and professor of dance, has created a scholarship for graduate-level dance majors.
“I am naming the Ernestine Ford Graduate Scholarship in Dance for my godmother, Ernestine Ford. Mrs. Ford, an independent and spirited woman, was my role model throughout my life,” said Prioleau. “She loved the arts and was a major supporter of my decision to become a professional dancer, and later she encouraged me to pursue a master’s degree in dance.”
In creating the scholarship, Prioleau wanted to honor Ford’s lifelong wisdom, strength and caring.
The award, which will go to an incoming graduate student in the Department of Dance, will better position the College to compete on a national stage to attract outstanding graduate-level dance students.
Prioleau was appointed dean in 2010 after serving as chair of the dance department. She came to Brockport in 2004. Previously, she served as assistant dean of the College of Fine and Professional Arts at Kent State University.
Prioleau’s professional training credits include the Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre and the International Center de Danse in Cannes, France. Her professional career spans more than 10 years in New York dancing with various dance companies. Prioleau has worked intensively with such dance masters as Alvin Ailey, Jimmy Truitte and Matt Mattox. She has been a free-lance modern and jazz dance choreographer and master teacher in the Ohio, Massachusetts, New York and European professional dance communities. Her areas of expertise include jazz, modern, dance pedagogy and choreography.
