Create Endowed Scholarship in Memory of His Parents
Vice President for Administration and Finance Louis M. ’82 Spiro and his wife, Gene, have created an endowed scholarship in loving memory of Lou’s parents.
The Norma and Herbert Spiro Memorial Scholarship will support an undergraduate transfer student from Monroe Community College enrolled in the teacher certification program in childhood inclusive education, adolescence inclusive education or physical education.
Norma and Herbert were both young adults during the Great Depression, and this experience greatly shaped their lives and values. The economic situation of their families deteriorated suddenly, leaving very little money for Herbert to attend college and preventing Norma from obtaining this opportunity completely. Permanent jobs were hard to find, but eventually Herbert obtained a job with the federal government, where he worked for the next 30 years. Over the years, Norma and Herbert sacrificed so that they could provide for their children, especially for their college education. Norma and Herbert placed great value on education, hard work and commitment to family, and these values have been passed onto their children and grandchildren. It is in their honor that this scholarship has been created, which will help deserving students reach their educational and life goals.
Scholarship recipients must have an associate’s degree from MCC and be accepted in the College’s teacher certification program in the department of education and human development or department of physical education and sport at the undergraduate level. In addition, students must have a 3.0 or higher GPA and demonstrate a commitment to teaching and leadership skills through service to their school or community.
