Continues Generous Support of Nursing Program
Representatives of the Alvin F. and Ruth K. Thiem Foundation in December paid a visit to the College to hear firsthand from nursing scholarship recipients how the Foundation’s continued support of the nursing program has allowed them to excel in their studies and provided them with the necessary time off from their jobs so they could complete hospital internships.
And the Foundation representatives also had some good news of their own to share. The Foundation Board unanimously voted to award a total of $52,000 in grants to The College at Brockport: $36,000 to support the Thiem Foundation Award for Nursing, as well as $16,000 for short-term student loans.
This brings the level of support from the Thiem Foundation to the College to a total of $322,000 since the Foundation and College established a relationship in 2002.
Foundation Board President Richard F. O’Connor and Board Member M. Donald O’Neill presented the College with the check during a Dec. 10 luncheon with students; Dr. Francis X. Short, Dean of the School of Health and Human Performance; Dr. Linda H. Snell, RN, Associate Dean for the School of Health and Human Performance; Dr. Kathy Peterson-Sweeney, RN, PNP, full professor chairperson of the Department of Nursing; and Bradley Schreiber, Director of Development in the Division of Advancement.
O’Connor noted that despite the downturn in the economy, the Foundation Board felt strongly about maintaining its funding at the same levels because this support is needed now more than ever by students.
The Thiem nursing scholarships are awarded to 12 students in their junior and senior year each year.
“You’re clearly getting the best education in the state,” O’Connor said. “Working and going to school, especially with the difficult program of nursing, our hope is this will help alleviate some of the stress.”
