The research “Dance Pedagogy: Integrating Cultural Diversity” consists of a lecture demonstration based on cultural diversity and its integration within dance pedagogy. The researchers Hashimoto and Burgos-Meléndez are aware of the complex nature of diversity and its importance in the development of education. Their previous academic and professional experiences in the field of psychology, sociology and pedagogy nourish this investigation. The differences between Japanese and Puerto Rican culture are used to develop movement-based strategies that could be used for dance composition. Language, cultural identity and memory are explored in relation to the kinesthetic-, self-awareness, personal empathy and response. Cultural imagery and sensations evoking a sense of place in terms of origin are also resourced to develop this teaching methodology. The objectives of the presentation are to inform audiences about the research process, demonstrate movement-based materials developed, and present an outline of the cultural diversity-based compositional approach.
