Few studies in the existing literature identify the potential relationships between relocation and the role of social factors in leisure activities for elders in long term, assisted, or independent living facilities. In order to understand these relationships, further research is needed. This area is especially important for social work professionals who work in assisted living facilities, nursing-homes, or retirement communities. Social workers are responsible for service coordination, person-centered care, and work as advocates for client needs. If elders identify leisure values as important to them in congregate housing settings, social workers have a responsibility to be aware of those needs and promote access to activities that support those needs. Furthermore, understanding this relationship will be beneficial for recreational professionals and program developers. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, it will investigate the relationship between leisure values, duration of residence, and type of residence for elders who reside in a large assisted and independent living setting. Second, this study will focus on the specific leisure value of ‘social interaction’, and its relationship to duration of residence, and type of residence for elders who reside at congregate housing sites.
