2013 Master's Level Graduate Research Conference

Session I - Session II - Session III

Readers' Theater and its Impact on First through Eighth Graders Oral Reading Fluency

Oral reading fluency is a necessary part of reading because it correlates to the main goal of reading: comprehension. Though it is coined as a vital role in reading proficiency it is often neglected and many resort to repeated readings as one of their only fluency activities. This presentation provides an alternate, effective, authentic, and engaging fluency tool for repeated readings: Readers’ Theater. The poster provides research-based evidence on how Readers’ Theater can help first through eighth grade students of all abilities improve their reading rate and accuracy, expression and volume, phrasing, and smoothness. In addition, it reveals how students and teachers are more motivated to improve and teach fluency skills and how students from different cultural, language, and ability backgrounds can benefit from participating in Readers’ Theater activities. Finally, since there are several demands and time constraints placed on teachers, the poster also demonstrates how this tool can be implemented within an already existing literacy curriculum. In addition, available packets contain materials in order to successfully carry out a Readers’ Theater activity. Lists of books which can be adapted into Readers’ Theater scripts and websites with readily available scripts are located inside the informational packet as well as ideas for fluency skill based mini-lessons, how to include other subject areas, alternate ways to perform the Readers’ Theater scripts, and how to group students based on research data.
