This poster describes the role of schools in offering students with disabilities equal opportunities in extracurricular athletics and interscholastic sports equal to those of other students. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires students with disabilities to have an equal opportunity for participation in nonacademic and extracurricular services and activities as their peers. This poster overviews some of the obligations of schools that receive Federal financial assistance regarding to this topic, cautions against making decisions based on presumptions and stereotypes, and the provision of separate or different athletic opportunities.
