Graduate Admissions

Admission
Admission to graduate study at SUNY Brockport is based on the academic and personal qualifications of applicants without regard to race/ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religions, national origin, marital status, or status as a Vietnam-era or disabled veteran.  The selection process identifies students whose academic ability, past performance, and motivation indicate the potential for success in graduate-level studies at SUNY Brockport.

Matriculated Status
Matriculated graduate students are those who have been admitted to a program of study leading to a master’s degree or a Certificate of Advanced Study.  SUNY Brockport assigns each matriculated student an advisor from the department offering the degree to assist the student in designing a Plan of Study that addresses the student’s own academic goals and meets program requirements. Final responsibility for meeting all graduate requirements, however, remains with the student.

Non-degree (non-matriculated) Status
Non-matriculated students are those individuals who:

  • have earned a baccalaureate degree and fulfilled the prerequisites for the courses in which they wish to enroll;
  • do not wish to pursue a degree but who, for their own interest, wish to enroll in graduate-level courses; and
  • intend to seek admission to a graduate program, but have not yet completed admissions requirements.

Non-matriculated graduate students wishing to enroll for the first time are required to submit a non-degree application, along with the required $25 fee, to the Office of Graduate Admissions. For further assistance please call (585) 395-5465. Please note this application should only be used for non-degree status. If you are interested in taking summer or winter courses only, please call the Special Sessions Office at (585) 395-5720.

A graduate committee within the department or departments concerned, reviews the academic background and other qualifications of each candidate and makes appropriate recommendations to the Office of Graduate Admissions. Only a letter from the Office of Graduate Admissions grants official matriculation.

Departments may recommend that an applicant be granted one of two types of admission:

  1. Regular admission: Matriculation iton a degree program without reservation, indicating a sound academic background in preparation for a specific program of graduate study.
  2. Conditional admission: Matriculation into a degree program on a conditional basis. Students admitted on a conditional basis will be apprised in writing of the conditions they must fulfill in order to achieve regular admission status. The maximum number of credits that can be earned while in conditional status is 12.

Students recommended for admission to a master's or advanced certificate program receive official notification of acceptance from the Office of Graduate Admissions.

Application for Non-degree Status (Non-matriculated)
Students interested in taking courses as a non-matriculated graduate student may apply directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions. Application for non-degree status requires that the applicant complete a brief application, pay a one-time $25 application fee and submit an official transcript documenting that the applicant holds a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution. If a transcript is not available at the time of registration, applicants will be given 30 days from the first day of classes to provide one.

Students who plan to later apply for admission to a graduate program should consult with the department before engaging in non-matriculated graduate study. Only a limited number of transfer credits and/or credits completed on a non-matriculated basis can be applied towards a Plan of Study.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Applications for the Graduate Record Examination and information on testing centers are available on the Graduate Record Examination web site or from the SUNY Brockport Office of Career Services.  Applications to take the examination must be made to the Educational Testing Service. Requirements for the GRE vary by department as described in each program’s application.

Financial Support for Graduate Study
Graduate students may be eligible for both federal and state aid, depending on matriculation status and whether they are pursuing full- or part-time study.  Specific information on financial aid can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office  or by calling (585) 395-2501.

Matriculated graduate students may also be eligible for financial support through SUNY Brockport's teaching assistantships, research assistantships, graduate diversity fellowships, and departmental awards/scholarships.  Information on these opportunities can be obtained from the Office of Graduate Admissions, or from the Office of Graduate Studies, (585) 395-2525.
