Swine Flu UpdateCover your nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough. Visit www.cdc.gov/h1n1 for more information.

For latest information, go to
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/  or
http://www.health.state.ny.us

Symptoms of Swine Flu always include fever, headache, body ache, harsh cough. Other symptoms may include sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Swine Flu is diagnosed by culture from the naso-pharynx.

Not all people with the above symptoms have swine flu, as other viruses may have similar symptoms, including seasonal influenza.

Treatment for swine flu includes:

  • Bedrest (no classes or work for at least 7 days from the start of symptoms)
  • Antiviral medications (available only by prescription)
  • Fluids
  • Over-the-counter medications (like Advil, Tylenol or Theraflu)  NO Aspirin.
  • Rest and… Time.

Remember - Not all coughs and fevers are caused by Swine flu.

Prevention of infection includes:

  • Handwashing – this is the most important measure you can take to prevent communicable illness.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze- use tissues or cough into your elbow
  • Discard used tissues properly, then wash your hands.

Contact The Student Health Center with any questions at 585-395-2414, or email us at healthce@brockport.edu.

The Student Health Center is in contact with Monroe County Health Department and Lakeside Hospital to monitor flu activity. The College administration is following the situation closely.

PLEASE NOTE Health Center Policy on Class Absences:
The Student Health Center does not issue excuses for class absences.
Any student seen in the SHC is given a statement noting only that he/she was:

  1. evaluated in the SHC, and
  2. the date and time of that evaluation.
When a student is restricted from class attendance because of communicable disease (strep, influenza, etc) or serious illness (appendicitis, kidney stone, mono, etc) a note is issued stating “bedrest’ or “no class attendance” and the timeframe of restriction
