Study Abroad Programs

For most students who have gone abroad, a semester or two living and learning in another culture becomes the highlight of their undergraduate years and often a transformative experience, leading to new interests and new career paths. It is something that will make you stand out in applying for scholarships, internships, graduate programs and jobs. Some students are able to set up internships as well as academic studies while overseas.

You have an enormous range of possibilities in terms of study abroad programs, both those sponsored by SUNY Brockport, and those sponsored by other SUNY and non- SUNY colleges. Many History majors have studied in England, Scotland and continental Europe, as well as Australia and New Zealand. The first History majors went to Maynooth University in Ireland in fall 2005. SUNY Brockport also runs excellent programs in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico where you can earn both Spanish and history credits. Among the many other excellent programs is the Ghana program, which usually takes place over winter break, and is led by faculty from Brockport’s Department of African and African-American Studies. Both the Ghana and Vietnam programs will earn you three credits of History plus other credits.

To find out about your options, go to the Office of International Education on the main floor of Morgan III (just west of Hartwell Hall), call them at 395-2119, or check their Web site at www.brockportabroad.com.
