Most local towns have archives and often the need for interns to help with cataloging and exhibit research. The list below represents only a small fraction of what is available, but are the societies/archives we have worked with the most. Please feel free to contact others. The DAR in Albion have a house with a collection of documents and objects pertaining to local history. They are looking to create a digital archive and need help with the cataloging process, cleaning and care of items and creation of new displays. They can only take advanced students with skills in public history and museum work - those who have already done internships - since they have no professional staff. RHS has a summer intern program for both undergraduate and graduate students. It also takes students throughout the year for cataloging and stocking objects as well as research into artifacts. There are two main types of internships at this outdoor museum. Summer internships work as historical re-enactors and help out with the exhibits. If you have skills in woodworking or other trades this can be useful to them. For more information, contact Maria D. Neale, Director of Education at (585) 538-6822 extension 216.

The museum has specific needs to be filled every semester. Check their website for different types of internships, but you can always fill out a general internship application and give them your interests as well. One of our past MA students, Shannon Symonds, works there and can answer questions if you have any.
