"Play and Young Children's Emergent Literacy" Presenter: Dongshin Shin, PhD, Department of Education and Human Development, The College at Brockport

This presentation introduces ways to support young children's emergent literacy development through play. The attendees will have an opportunity to engage with a story-telling and story-performing approach.

"Creating a Caring Classroom" Presenter: Angela Colt, MS and Julie Pfenninger, BS, The Children's School at URMC

This session will focus on the importance of creating a caring, kind classroom environment within the early childhood setting. Participants will explore practical strategies and skills to utilize in their own classroom, maximizing each child's success."R

Recognizing and Helping Children Experiencing Stress" Presenter: Linda J. Sullivan, MSED, Inclusion Associate, Regional Early Childhood Direction Center

This workshop will discuss signs and causes of stress in young children and provide strategies for teaching coping and management skills. The focus will be on helping children gain a better understanding of the emotions they are experiencing and gain confidence, positive self-esteem and resilience.

"Brain-Based Dance Education: Developing Cognitive, Kinesthetic and Social Connectivity" Presenter: Juanita Suarez, PhD, Department of Dance, The College at Brockport

Are young learners awake and present when they enter the world of the classroom? Can young learners develop a stronger focus for learning? By introducing research-based progressive movement concepts developing cognitive, kinesthetic and social connectivity, we will learn how brain-based dance education activates the attention and holistic potential of young learners.

"Music for the Very Young: Exploring Music in Early Childhood" Presenter: Jennifer Trimble, MS, Hochstein School of Music and Dance

A look at the necessity of early exposure to music. From the rhythmic and tonal elements that form the building blocks of language development to increased awareness of self and others through musical collaboration, music can provide a safe context in which to practice and develop new skills.

"The Developmental, Behavioral/Mental Health and Educational Needs of Children in Foster Care" Presenter: Paula Barbel, MS, PNP, Department of Nursing, The College at Brockport

The presentation will describe the developmental, behavioral/ mental health and educational problems of children and teens in foster care, including methods of identifying these problems and strategies for beginning to address these issues.

"Meeting the Needs of Preschool English Language Learners" Presenter: Betty Garcia Mathewson, Opening Doors Diversity Project Director, Research Foundation, The College at Brockport

Understanding the critical issues for preschool English language learners and their parents lays the foundation for providing quality programming. We will examine these issues and explore their impact on the classroom. Participants will be giving guidelines for working with youth and strategies for building relationships with the parents.

This presentation will discuss how to prevent young children from bullying online or offline.

"The Box Sculpture — Creating Collaboratively with Children" Presenter: Suzanne Kolodziej, MA, Cornell University

This presentation will explain how to provide children with a developmentally appropriate art experience working with color and form that reinforces basic concepts in early childhood education, while they learn the importance of working in a cooperative manner. There will be a handson component during the presentation and a discussion of children's current literature.

"Applying Observation Strategies in Early Childhood Settings" Presenter: Jie Zhang, PhD, Department of Education and Human Development, The College at Brockport

The purpose of this presentation is to apply a variety of observation strategies with young children in early childhood settings. Handouts, videos, hands-on activities, and discussions will be used during this presentation to facilitate participants' better understanding of the topic and to practice their observation skills.
