Investigating the Effects of Variable Inlet Velocity Profiles at Main Carotid Artery and Different Carotid Artery Bifurcation Angles

Authors: Şenol Pişkin, M. Serdar Çelebi (Istanbul Technical University, Institute of Informatics)

Abstract

In this numerical study, a 3D carotid artery bifurcation model is studied. This is one of the ongoing studies of Pişkin and Çelebi. Inlet velocity profile and angle between common carotid artery and internal carotid artery and angle between common carotid artery and external carotid artery are important parameters of the mechanical properties of carotid artery hemodynamics. Especially the effects of the change of inlet profile at main carotid artery to internal carotid artery sinus and external carotid artery are investigated. Also the effects of angle between internal and external carotid artery are investigated. Pressure and wall-shear stress changes at these regions are obtained and compared. Intense computations are performed on Xeon 64-bit based cluster computer system.
