Obtaining a Social Security Number

Social Security Card

A Social Security Number is a nine-digit number issued in the United States for work purposes. If you plan to work in the U.S., including on campus, you will need a Social Security Number before you can begin work. Your College at Brockport ID number is not a Social Security Number.

In order to obtain a Social Security Number, you will need to submit an application to the Social Security Administration and a number will be sent to you in about one month.

In general, you will need the following items to apply for a Social Security Number:

  • A completed application;
  • A valid passport;
  • A valid I-94 card;
  • Original I-20 form; and
  • Verification of an offer of employment.

You must appear in person at the Social Security office. The nearest office is located at 4050 West Ridge Road, Rochester. You can obtain an application and directions to the nearest Social Security office in the Office of International Student Services.

For more information about Social Security Numbers, please visit the U.S. Social Security Administration.
