Health Insurance is mandatory for all international students enrolled at State University of New York (SUNY) campuses. Health insurance provides medical coverage to individuals up to a certain standard. This is necessary in case of illness, accidents or even just routine doctor’s visits.
Additionally, you should learn about health resources available to you on campus and any required immunizations for which you must show proof of immunity.
In June 1985, the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees passed a resolution making health insurance mandatory for all international students enrolled at SUNY campuses. This is also mandatory for all American students enrolled at SUNY campuses as well as for any students traveling abroad on approved SUNY academic programs and exchanges.
All international students with F-1 or J-1 student visa categories and other non-immigrant visa categories are required to enroll in this SUNY-mandated policy. The designated claims representative for this policy is HTH Worldwide Insurance Services. International scholars with J-1 exchange/visitor, researcher, and professor visa categories are also required to enroll in this policy, but they are exempt if enrolled in the graduate assistant policy.
More information about this SUNY-mandated policy can be found at http://www.brockport.edu/bursar/insurance/intl-stu-ins.htm.
Please note: If you or your spouse is pregnant and traveling to Brockport, please consult the Office of International Student Services about insurance coverage before you arrive in the United States. It is likely that the cost of delivery and pre/post-natal care will not be covered by the mandated insurance plan.
New York State Public Health Law requires all student to provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella. Other immunizations against infectious diseases – including tetanus, diphtheria, polio, Hepatitis B and meningitis – are strongly recommended. Tuberculosis screening, with mantoux ppd, should be done prior to arrival. For more information, please visit the Student Health Center.
The on-campus Student Health Center provides outpatient medical care and educational programming to all registered students of SUNY - Brockport. Visits are free for students who have paid the mandatory student health fee.
The Student Health Center provides a variety of services including physicals, immunizations, treatment of illnesses and infections, over-the-counter remedies, and more. The center is regularly staffed by registered nurses and nurse practitioners.
The Student Health Center is open 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday during the academic year (Summer hours vary). Appointments are strongly encouraged, but walk-in appointments are available. Check the Center’s website for more information.
If you require medical attention outside of these hours, care is available at Lakeside Memorial Hospital on a fee-for-service basis. Lakeside Memorial Hospital is located approximately one mile away from campus at 156 West Ave.
Please note: Dental and eye care is not available at the Student Health Center. Since both are quite expensive in the United States, it is advised that you have a routine examination and any necessary services performed before you arrive in the U.S. Emergency visits can be arranged if necessary.
