We use a variety of methods to gather information from students in an attempt to better understand
their experiences while at Brockport. Collecting and analyzing these data is one way we strive
toward continual institutional improvement. Student surveys are important tools in these efforts,
and one survey we regularly participate in is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).
The survey asks students to report on a variety of behaviors that research suggests matter for
student learning and development. Over 400,000 first-year and senior students from hundreds of
U.S. colleges and universities took the survey in spring 2011. Brockport chose to have NSSE
administered online via the web that spring, and we invited all of our first-year and senior students
to participate; 281 freshmen and 665 seniors responded. Our overall response rate was 27%,
which was equal to the average response rate across all institutions that participated in 2011.
