We use a variety of methods to gather information from students in an attempt to better understand their experiences while at Brockport. Collecting and analyzing these data aid our institutional efforts to continually improve. Student surveys are one important source of information, and one we regularly participate in is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The survey asks students to report on a variety of behaviors that research suggests matter for student learning and development. Just over 350,000 first-year and senior students from hundreds of U.S. colleges and universities took the survey in spring 2014. NSSE is administered online, and we invited all of our first-year and senior students to participate. A total of 854 students responded—271 freshmen and 583 seniors—for an overall response rate of 26%. Our response rate was just above that of the average response rate for all other institutions our size that participated in 2014 (24%).
