Configuring an Outlook 2007 Account

Note: These instructions only apply if you did not have Outlook configured before the migration. If you need your existing account re-configured, call the Help Desk at x5151 option 1.

Open Outlook 2007 and you will be prompted to type in a Profile Name. Type your First and Last Name.
Add the account settings. Where it says “E-mail Address:” you need to type your “NetID@brockport.edu”. The password is your NetID password. After filling out the “Auto Account Setup” information select the “Manually configure server settings or additional server types” check box.

Click ‘Next’.

Click ‘Next’.
Change Account type to “IMAP” from the drop down menu. Enter in “mail.brockport.edu” for the incoming and outgoing mail server settings. Enter in your NetID and password. Click the “More Settings” button.

After clicking the “More Settings…” button, in the General tab, change the account name to “Brockport IMAP”, and change the Organization to “The College at Brockport”. Also, select the check box at the bottom that says “Purge items when switching folders while online” (Please note that if you select this checkbox it will permanently delete your messages.  Unfortunately, Outlook handles IMAP so that when you mark a message for deletion it will permanently be deleted.  The message does not go to the trash folder as expected.  Unselect this box if you don’t want messages to be deleted when marked for deletion.).

Click the “Outgoing Server” tab and check the “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” button.

If using a laptop, please do the following step (Not necessary if using a desktop that always resides within the campus network): Click the “Advanced” tab and set the “Incoming server (IMAP):” to “SSL” by selecting the pull down menu next to “Use the following type of encrypted connection:”. Set the “Outgoing server (SMTP):” to “TLS” by selecting the pull down menu next to “Use the following type of encrypted connection:”.

Click ‘OK’ on the “Internet E-mail Settings” window.

In the “Add New E-mail Settings” window select the “Test Account Settings…” button to verify that the NetID, password, and mail settings are configured properly. If it is successful, click ‘Next’ in the “Add New E-mail Settings” window.

You will be prompted with a window regarding if you want to enable the Instant Search feature. Select the check box “Do not show this message again” and click ‘No’.

Another message about RSS feeds will come up. Click ‘No’ for that as well.

Go to ‘Tools’à ‘Account Settings…’à’Email’ tab à Select ‘Change…’àSelect ‘More Settings…à and then ‘Folders’ tab.

Choose the second option: “Choose an existing folder or create a new folder to save your sent items for this account in” and Select “Brockport IMAP” à “Sent” folder.  This will map all sent mail from Outlook 2007 to also show up in the sent folder in webmail.

Click ‘OK’, ‘Next’, and then‘Finish’.

To set up your Brockport IMAP Inbox to default on start up you must click ‘Tools’ –> ‘Options’.

In the Options window click the “Other” tab.

Click the button that says “Advanced Options…” under the General section.

In the “Advanced Options” window, under General Settings, next to where it says “Startup in this folder:” there is a “Browse…” button. Click that.

Under the “Brockport IMAP” folder there is an “Inbox” folder.  Select that then click ‘OK’.

Click ‘OK’. Click ‘OK’ again in the “Advanced Options” window. Click ‘OK’ in the “Options” window.

Please go back to the Tools à Options window and select the button “Junk E-Mail…” as shown below:

Then select “No Automatic Filtering.  Mail from blocked senders is still moved to the Junk E-mail folder” (If you don’t select this option you may automatically filter messages as junk e-mail generated from Banner or various other systems that are legitimate).  Once selected please select “OK”.

Now you need to go to the “Mail Setup” tab in the Options window.  Select the “Send/Receive…” button as shown below:

Then select “Edit…” as shown below:

Then select under “Receive mail items” the option “Use the custom behavior defined below”.  Ensure that the only checkbox selected is the “Inbox”.  Select “OK”, “Close” and then “OK”.

You have now successfully configured Outlook 2007 for your mail account!
