Minimum Hardware Requirements
for Desktops and Laptops

For Faculty & Staff Computers:

All computers purchased with State funds are now pre-approved by ITS prior to processing by Procurement & Payment Services. Departments and offices are strongly encouraged to order standard desktops and laptops as described in the Technology Procurement System.

These configurations change from time to time as market conditions change.

For Student Computers: (updated May 5, 2008)

Many students bring laptop (or notebook) computers to campus. This allows students to take advantage of wireless network while away from the residence halls.

For new computer purchases we suggest the following as minimum configurations:

Notebook or Desktop

  • 1.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or higher
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 60 GB Hard Drive
  • CDRW/DVD Drive
  • Integrated Ethernet Card
  • Integrated Wireless Card
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Vista, or OSX

Add-ons

  • Microsoft Office 2007 Professional or Student Edition
  • Flash drives (also known as USB Memory keys, thumb drives and pen drives)
  • Surge protectors
  • Ethernet Cable

Note: Antivirus software is provided free of charge.
