Advances in Internet technology have helped to make the use of frames in Web design nearly obsolete, especially on the SUNY Brockport Web site. The College's use of templates for design has standardized the layout of our site and does not compliment the use of frames.
If maintaining a site that is still outside of the templates and relies on frames then the maintainer should include what is called a NO FRAMES tag on the frame source page. This method could also provide an alternate page as an escape for people who have difficulty with frames.
The final issue concerning frames is screen readers, which are often used by the blind to access the Web. These readers often get confused when visiting a Web site making their Web browsing experience a very unwelcoming one. Removing and steering clear of frames when making a site is not only good Web design but also a necessary part of making the Web accessible to all visitors.
