Defining and Managing Sites

When first using Dreamweaver, whether configuring it to edit an existing site or to develop a new site, it is very helpful to use Dreamweaver’s built-in site manager. To manage a new site, from any Dreamweaver window, select Site > New Site from the menu.

The Site Definition dialog box appears. Click on the Advanced tab to use the Advanced settings, which enable you to set up local and remote folders individually.

The most important and necessary fields are located in the Local Info and Remote Info categories. Fill in the fields for the Local Info. This information will differ depending on your site.

  • Site Name is what you want the site to be called in Dreamweaver.
  • Local Root Folder is where your computer you want to store the files (this can be specified by clicking on the Folder Icon ).
  • HTTP Address specifies where the site is located on the Internet.
—For official College web pages: use http://www.brockport.edu/
—For personal and non-departmental web pages: use http://holly.acs.brockport.edu/

Make sure Links Relative to: Document and Use case-sensitive link checking is selected.

Then select Remote Info.

When you select your Access type, the rest of the dialog appears. For almost every case, Access will be FTP. Fill in the fields according to the information provided below.

Note: You must check the Use Secure FTP (SFTP) box. The other options are matter of preference.

IMPORTANT!

For Security reasons, passwords should NOT be saved, especially in public computers. On personal machines, it is a personal choice. Be aware that if the password is saved, anyone who sits down and uses the PC has access to edit the web site.

If you are setting up a personal or non-departmental website on the Holly server, the settings should look like this:

If you are supporting an official The College at Brockport website, the settings should look like this:

Next, click on Design Notes, and uncheck the box Maintain Design Notes.

Once all thes steps are completed, click OK at the bottom of the window.

You will see the new site appear in the list of managed sites. The site is now defined, click Done. Dreamweaver will attempt to create a cache of local files.
