Step-by-step guide on using FTP
Below is a list of instructions for how to FTP files from a Windows 2000 machine. Note: All htm, html, css, ssi and text files should be sent as ASCII or Plain Text all gif, jpeg, jpg and other images should be sent as binary. Make sure the appropriate box is checked before clicking the arrow and initiating the transfer.
- Click on Start>Programs>Exceed>FTP.
- A window titled "Open Connection" will appear.
- For "Server Name" type ftp.web.brockport.edu
- For "User Name" type in your Brockport e-mail user id. (For students this is the first initial of first name, first three initials of last name, followed by a two-digit birth month and a two-digit birth day.)
- For "Password" type in your account password. (This password is not the same as your Webmail/Angel password. This password was set when your Webmaster account was created. Contact the SUNY Brockport Webmaster if you need assistance with your password)
- Everything else in the window should be set properly by default. So, click the open button.
- Go to the menu bar and click on Window>Tile Horizontally.
- There are two options avaialbe at this step depending on whether your are sending or receiving. For both examples, the file to be sent/received will originate or be downloaded to the a: drive. Simply browse to the correct path if this is not the case.
- Sending:
- Click on the drop down arrow in the lower window and select the a: drive.
- On the right side of the "a:/*.*" window, click once to highlight the file you are sending. Next, drag that file up to the window for your account, (your user id and remote server name will be in the title) and let go of the mouse button.A copy of that file has now been sent to your account.
- Receiving: (reverse the procedure for sending)
- Click on the name of a file in the window for your account, then drag that file down to the "a:/*.*" window.You have now received a copy of that file on your disk.
- Sending:
- When you are done transferring files, be sure to logout and close any open windows.
