E-mail Information

Information for New Users

What is e-mail?

E-mail is an electronic messaging system that allows you to send memos, letters, and computer files to other people on campus, or around the world. E-mail provides a way to send a message to someone both quickly and inexpensively.

How do I get e-mail at The College at Brockport?

Students:

Each student is issued a NetID for the duration of his or her academic career at The College at Brockport. It is not necessary for students to request a NetID; it is created automatically. A NetID is used to access Brockport e-mail accounts.

If you're having trouble accessing your e-mail account, or do not have an e-mail account, please contact the ITS Help Desk at (585) 395-5151.

Faculty/Staff:

Each faculty/staff member is issued a NetID for the duration of their affiliation with The College at Brockport.  In most cases a NetID will automatically be created based on appointment information received from Human Resources. A NetID is used to access Brockport e-mail accounts.

If you’re having trouble accessing your e-mail account, or do not have an e-mail account, please contact the ITS Help Desk at (585) 395-5151.

What's my NetID and password?

Students:

NetID: The format for student NetIDs has changed over time. See the NetID documentation to learn how to discover your NetID.

Password: When you log in for the first time, your password is your first initial followed by the last five digits of your Banner ID. For example, if your name was John Doe, and your Banner ID was 800123456, your password would be j23456. It is strongly recommended that you change your password.

Faculty/Staff:

NetID: Faculty/Staff NetIDs are created based on characters from your first name, middle initial, and last name depending on availability.  See the NetID documentation to learn how to discover your NetID.

How can I access my e-mail...

From the computer labs, residence halls, or home?

For easiest access, use our WebMail interface. WebMail allows you to access all features of the e-mail system through a Web browser such as Netscape Navigator, Firefox or Internet Explorer. If you can surf the Web, you can access your e-mail.

The WebMail web site is https://mail.brockport.edu

From my office?

The College at Brockport recommends and supports the configuration Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird for faculty and staff computers. If you need help configuring Outlook or Thunderbird for the campus e-mail system, please call the ITS Help Desk at x5151 to schedule an appointment to have it installed and/or configured.

Faculty and Staff may also use WebMail at https://mail.brockport.edu

How can I send e-mail?

How you actually send e-mail will depend on the application you use. Start up the e-mail program, and look for icons or menu selections that prompt you to "Compose" a new message, "Create" a new message, send a message "To:" someone, or write a "New Message."

When you send a new e-mail message, all e-mail programs present you with a form to fill out. Each of the blanks on the form has a special meaning:

  • To: The person you are sending the message to. E-mail addresses have the form of name@some.internet.site. You can send a single message to many people by listing their e-mail addresses here, separated by commas.
  • Cc: Carbon-copy. A copy of the message will be sent to any addresses listed in this field.
  • Bcc: Blind carbon-copy. A copy of the message will be sent to any addresses listed in this field, but their addresses will not be listed as part of the message.
  • Subject: The topic of your message. The only rule for this field is to keep it relatively short. Most e-mail programs only display the first 40-50 characters of the subject.
  • Attachment: The name of the file(s) you want to send along with your e-mail message. You don't have to attach a file to every message, but this field is here if you need to. Some e-mail programs have an attachment icon instead of a blank on the form. See the Help documentation for your e-mail program for more information on attaching files.

Fill out these blanks as needed, and type your message in the message area. All e-mail programs will have a Send icon or some key combination to send the message.

How can people send me e-mail?

You will have to give your e-mail address to any person that you want to contact you. If you know their e-mail address, you can simply send them a message. Otherwise you might have to send them a letter through "snail mail" or give them a phone call.

Your e-mail address is: <your NetID>@brockport.edu.

At times, you might get e-mail messages from people you don't know. These are commonly referred to as "spam" mail, and are the equivalent of paper junk mail. Spam mail is usually worthless junk or instructions for an ill-conceived, illegal scam, and it is important to delete them. Programmers around the world are working on ways to eliminate spam mail from the Internet, but because of its unpredictable nature, the task is nearly impossible. In the meantime, deleting the mail is the only way to deal with it. Please do not reply to spam mail, as it only confirms to the spammer that the message is getting to people. Similarly, do not send or reply to "chain letters."
