Identity Data DisclosureFrequently Asked QuestionsUpdated Friday, April 18, 2008
What happened? On April 14, 2008, The College at Brockport was informed that a laptop with current and former students' private information had been stolen. It is estimated that the laptop contained private information for approximately 1,500 individuals who included Brockport in their financial aid application process for the 2002-03 academic year. The estimated number of enrolled Brockport students is much fewer, but the College is taking immediate action. The laptop was owned by a consultant from SunGard, the company that provides Banner®—the records system used at The College at Brockport. The College received copies of the compromised files on April 17 and has begun analyzing them. We will be working closely with SunGard to determine which students were affected and what information was included about them. As soon as we can make these determinations we will notify each individual by mail. While SunGard has verified that there have been no confirmed reports of fraud or identity theft at this time, The College at Brockport takes the security of private identity information very seriously. For more information, SunGard has set up a Web site on this incident at www.sungardhe.com/laptoptheft. In addition, SunGard has set up a help desk to respond to questions at 1-866-520-2408. Are there any confirmed reports of fraud related to this disclosure? No. When did this happen?SunGard has determined that the laptop was stolen on March 13, 2008. At that time, the vendor began to determine exactly what data was on the laptop. Through SunGard’s analysis of backup files from the stolen laptop, the vendor determined that the laptop contained information about Brockport students. The College was initially notified in the late afternoon on April 14, 2008. What kind of information was on the laptop? The files on the stolen laptop included names and Social Security numbers of about 1,500 people who had included Brockport in their financial aid application process, a subset of which is a small number of current and former Brockport students. The vendor has also indicated that other types of identifying information for a smaller subset of students may have been on the laptop. How will I know if my private information was included? The College at Brockport is proactively contacting each person whose information may have been on the stolen laptop to notify them of this incident and to provide information on what they should do next. How will I be notified? If your data was on the laptop, you will be notified by mail. In addition to the Web site, SunGard has set up a help desk to respond to questions: 1-866-520-2408. In the meantime, what actions should I take to protect my information? You may want to take the precaution of placing a free fraud alert on your credit files held by the three national credit reporting agencies. The law allows you to place an initial fraud alert on your credit file free of charge for an initial period of 90 days. This notification alerts creditors to use additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides a host of information for consumers who believe they may have been the victims of identity theft.
How do I place a fraud alert? To place a fraud alert on your credit file, please contact the toll-free number of any one of the three major credit reporting companies. For your convenience, the numbers for each of the credit reporting agencies is provided below.
Who is SunGard? The College at Brockport contracted with SunGard to provide various consulting services in support of the implementation of the Banner student information system. Because of the services provided, contractor employees may be provided access to data in the student information system to perform the tasks assigned to them. It is expected that consultants will remove any sensitive data from their laptops upon completion of their assigned tasks. |
