Entry Into the United States

Arrival Information

When you arrive at a port of entry into the United States, you will be required to present your Form I-20, along with your passport, visa stamp (except Canadians), and financial documents to the immigration officer.

The immigration officer will keep one copy of your Form I-20 and stamp another copy and return it to you. F-1 students will be returned page 3 of 4 of the I-20, called the "I-20 ID" copy. The "I-20 ID" copy is the permanent record of your permission to enter and remain in the U.S. This must be kept in your possession for as long as you are a student.

The immigration officer will also issue a completed I-94 Arrival-Departure Record. The I-94 is an extremely important document. It indicates your visa status and the date when your permission to remain in the U.S. expires. The I-94 must be kept in your passport at all times.

Getting to Brockport, New York

We strongly urge all new international students to arrange their travel schedule so that they can arrive in order to participate in the International Student Orientation. If students are planning on living off campus, they should plan to arrive at least one week prior to this in order to find suitable housing. Please do not plan to arrive on a Saturday or Sunday, if possible, as most College facilities, including the Office for International Student Services, are closed.

The easiest way to travel to Brockport is by arriving first in Rochester, NY, by either plane, train, or bus. When making your reservations, try to fly directly or find a connecting flight to the Greater Rochester International Airport.

Travel from Rochester International Airport to the College

For students who arrive on dates specified by International Student Services (ISS), transportation from Rochester will be provided. Students wishing to be picked up in Rochester should complete the arrival form. For travel on days other than those specified, the easiest way to travel from the airport to the College is by taxi ($35 plus 15 percent tip). After you pick up your luggage at the baggage claim area in the terminal, go to the pay phone and call a taxi at (585) 235-7777. Tell them that you are a student at the airport and you need to go to The College at Brockport. Once the taxi has picked you up, you should indicate to the driver that you are going to The College at Brockport's McLean Hall or wherever you have made arrangements to stay.
