About the Leadership Academy Program
SUNY Brockport's Leadership Academy prepares students to become responsible and influential members of a global community. Through an intense and supportive educational environment, students are empowered to lead with integrity, honor, and commitment. They do so by integrating the knowledge offered to them through the college’s strong liberal arts and professional education programs, diverse experiences on and off campus, and the development of individual and organizational leadership skills. Leadership Academy encourages participation in a variety of educational activities focused on career, personal, organizational, and global leadership development. Together, these experiences provide students with a strong foundation on which to build as they become leaders in their chosen endeavors while students at SUNY Brockport, as well as after graduation and throughout their lives.
Participation in Leadership Academy represents a sustained commitment on the part of the student throughout their time at SUNY Brockport. Leadership Academy is designed to promote intellectual, ethical, and civic values. Participants are encouraged to share their diverse talents and experiences with others throughout the program and work together to develop the skills to become responsible global citizens. Recognizing that each student develops at a different pace and that their interests and needs are unique to them, the program incorporates criteria that:
- Encourage a holistic approach to leadership development
- Fosters personal development, including communication skills, creative problem solving, risk taking, and wellness
- Provides for the acquisition of the organizational skills necessary to work well with others and to motivate groups towards a common goal
Students may participate in any individual workshop; however, those students wishing to receive a tangible incentive for participation may choose to earn a certificate of completion. The certificate of completion is awarded upon successful completion of the following Leadership Academy requirements: reflection paper, pre and post evaluation, attendance at 2 workshops in four areas (a total of 8), participation in at least four hours of a civic engagement experience, attendance at 5 campus and/or community activities, resume (reviewed by the Office of Career Services) and 3 journal submissions submitted by the established deadlines.
The Leadership Academy program is an interdisciplinary approach to leadership and career development that utilizes the following tools to promote student development:
