Joel Agate Joel R. Agate is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies. In 2010, Dr. Agate completed his Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at Clemson University, emphasizing in community recreation. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree, also from Clemson University and a Master of Science in Youth and Family Recreation and a Bachelor of Science in Marriage, Family, and Human Development, both from Brigham Young University. Before Brockport, Dr. Agate spent three years as an Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he taught a variety of courses within the recreation program.

Dr. Agate also serves as a member of the Steering Committee of the US Play Coalition: A partnership to promote the value of play throughout life. As an advocate for play, he has presented around the United States on the value of play and tactics for bringing play back into the lives of people across the lifespan. His research agenda is focused on understanding the causes of play deprivation in people’s lives and discovering ways to get people to come out and play!

In an effort to practice what he preaches, Dr. Agate spends as much time as possible exploring wildness, parks, and historic sites with his wife and three young children. It is not uncommon to find the young Agates donning their explorer hats and wandering the paths and trails of Rochester’s many wonderful recreation destinations.
