The School of Letters and Sciences consists of 17 departments and five programs that span the humanities, the natural sciences, and the social sciences. Our talented faculty currently includes seven Distinguished Professors, and 24 recipients of the coveted SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. All of our faculty are committed to student success through quality teaching and cutting-edge research, especially research that involves students as active collaborators.

In addition to grounding our majors firmly in the theories and methods of their disciplines, the School plays a central role in providing all students a secure intellectual foundation through SUNY Brockport's unique General Education curriculum. We pay special attention to connections among disciplines, because solving the complex problems of the 21st century will require teamwork among experts from many different specialties and backgrounds. We encourage students not only to be active participants in our classes, but to take advantage of enrichment opportunities, such as those provided by the Writers Forum and the Philosophic Exchange, which bring to campus the finest writers, social critics and philosophers of our time.

We challenge our students to think and to defend their ideas orally and in writing, and to learn from experience through internships in government, industry and the professions.

Our facilities are second to none and available to all students. The latest, most expensive equipment is not reserved exclusively for faculty use; it is open to students for their research and course work as well. We believe in a hands-on approach to undergraduate education. Visit our science labs and you will see biology students using electron microscopes, meteorology students using Doppler radar, chemistry students using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, and physics students using tunable lasers. High performance super computers support the computational science program. A computerized, multi-media language lab facilitates instruction in seven languages. Personal computers and workstations abound in labs used by students in all majors. And the Internet is a common teaching tool and student resource.

We are confident that our carefully crafted curricula and richly supportive activities prepare our students to succeed in the competitive world of the 21st century.
