Brockport Email Filtering

Brockport uses a system of filters to prevent undesired spam, phishing, and inappropriate emails from reaching our users. While nearly 80% of all email sent to the College is blocked, filtering is not a precise process. On occasion legitimate email is blocked or spam email is not caught by the filters. The documentation below provides information on how users can check their spam quarantine and adjust their settings. Note: Adjustments to quarantine settings only impact non-brockport.edu email addresses.

How can I check to see what mail was sent to me that was filtered by the Brockport spam filter?

  1. Open a web browser and go to http://spam.brockport.edu
  2. Login with your NetID and password

How can I deliver a specific message that was quarantined?

  1. From within your Quarantine Inbox, locate the specific message that you would like delivered, and click the blue “Deliver” text next to the message under the Actions column. This will release the message and deliver it to your Brockport mailbox.

How can I mark a specific message as spam?

  1. From within your Quarantine Inbox, click the check box next to the message you wish to mark as spam, then click the “Spam” button in the toolbar.

How can I always allow (Whitelist) email from a specific email address?

  1. From within your Quarantine Inbox, select Preferences at the top of the screen. This should bring up a screen of your Whitelist/Blacklist settings.
  2. Under the section titled “Allowed Email Addresses and Domains (Whitelist)”, enter the email address that you wish to allow in the Email Address text box and hit the “Add” button directly to the right.
  3. Adding email addresses to the “Whitelist” will allow all mail from those addresses to be delivered directly to your Brockport mailbox and will prevent them from being quarantined.

How can I prevent (Blacklist) spam from a specific sender from getting to me?

  1. From within your Quarantine Inbox, select Preferences at the top of the screen. This should bring up a screen of your Whitelist/Blacklist settings.
  2. Under the section titled “Blocked Email Addresses and Domains (Blacklist)”, enter the email address that you wish to block in the Email Address text box and hit the “Add” button directly to the right.
  3. Adding email addresses to the “Blacklist” will prevent mail from those addresses from being delivered to your Brockport mailbox. Please note that if you Blacklist an email address, messages received from that address will not be stored in your Quarantine Inbox and are immediately discarded.

How can I receive a daily report of the messages that have been quarantined?

  1. From within your Quarantine Inbox, select Preferences at the top of the screen. This should bring up a screen of your Whitelist/Blacklist settings.
  2. At the top of the screen next to Whitelist/Blacklist is an option for Quarantine Settings. Select this option.
  3. Under Quarantine Notification, you can select how often to receive an email report of your messages that have been quarantined. The recommended interval is Daily.
  4. You do not need to enter a notification address as the report will automatically be sent to your brockport.edu address.
  5. Click the Save Changes button at the top of the Quarantine Notification section. You will now receive an email report each day listing the messages that have been quarantined for your account along with links to either Deliver, Whitelist, or Blacklist the messages if similar ones are received in the future.

Notes:

-Quarantined mail will be available via your Quarantine Inbox for a period of 30 days.
