TurnItIn App - Using GradeMark

Overview

Turnitin is an iPad app that syncs with Turnitin on your desktop allowing Faculty to grade on the go. Turnitin for iPad allows instructors to:

  • Leave comments, marks, and highlights
  • Grade with interactive rubrics
  • Add a voice comment
  • View an originality report
  • Navigate between papers, assignments, and classes
  • Grade offline

This documentation will provide instructions for using GradeMark on the iPad to grade student papers. This documentation is intended for those who have already installed and setup the app. If you have not already done so see TurnItIn App - set-up instructions for assistance with the installation.

Leave comments, marks and highlights

NOTE: All comments can be moved by tapping and holding their icons and dragging them to preferred location.

Strike-Through:

1. Tap and hold text to be marked. Initially the entire line will be selected; by dragging the drag points you can encompass the range you want to select, including whole or partial words.

2. Tap the 'S' (with a red line through it) button from the menu:

3. The text that was selected should now have a red line through it:

4. To remove the strike-through from the text tap on the given text and tap the 'trash' button illustrated below:

Comment:

1. Tap and hold text to be highlighted and commented. Initially the entire line will be selected; by dragging the drag points you can encompass the range you want to select, including whole or partial words. Or tap once anywhere on page to add comment not specific to text.

2. Tap the 'conversation bubble' button from the menu:

3. Type desired comment in the space given and select color you would like the text to be highlighted in:

4. Once you tap anywhere outside of the comment box it should appear with the button illustrated below. To read the comment again or make edits, tap the 'conversation bubble' box:

5. To move the comment icon to a different location tap and hold the icon and drag it to the location where you would like it to be placed.

6. To remove the comment, tap the 'trash' button in the top right corner:

Using QuickMessage Comments:

1. Tap and hold text to be highlighted and commented. Initially the entire line will be selected, by dragging the drag points you can encompass the range you want to select, including whole or partial words. Or tap once anywhere on page to add comment not specific to text.

2. Tap the 'QM button' from the menu:

3. Select color you would like the text to be highlighted in:

4. If the desired QuickMessage is not available tap the 'bulletin button' in the top left corner. Tap the preferred subject. When proper QuickMessage is found, tap to select it:

5. The QM should now appear as a comment on the selected text. To make edits to or remove the comment, tap the comment button to open it:

6. To remove the comment, tap the 'trash' button in the top right corner:

Note: An additional comment can be added to QuickMessage by tapping the 'add Conversation Bubble' in the top left corner. This additional comment can be accessed by tapping the 'Conversation Bubble' that appears in place of the 'add conversation bubble'.

Creating QuickMessage Comments:

1. Tap and hold text to be highlighted and commented. Initially the entire line will be selected; by dragging the drag points you can encompass the range you want to select, including whole or partial words. Or tap once anywhere on page to add comment not specific to text.

2. Tap the 'QM button' from the menu:

3. Tap the 'Create QuickMessage' button in the top left corner:

4. Add a title and select the subject you would like the QuickMessage to be stored under and select save:

5. You may now access this QuickMessage by following the “Using QuickMessage comments” steps above.

Inline Comments:

1. Tap once anywhere within the text or margins.

2. Tap the 'T' button in the menu:

3. Type the inline comment in the box provided:

4. Tap outside of the box. You may now hold and drag this inline comment to wherever you prefer:

Add a General comment

1. Tap the 'Pencil' button in the top-right corner or swipe across with one finger to access the Grade Overview Page:

2. Tap the blue 'Pencil' button next to 'General Comments':

3. Type desired comment and select done:

Add a Voice comment

1. Tap the 'Pencil' button in the top-right corner or swipe across with one finger to access the Grade Overview Page:

2. Tap the 'record' button to begin recording voice message:

3. When finished recording your message, tap the 'Stop' button:

4. You can play back the message you recorded to be sure it is desirable. To delete the voice message, tap the 'Trash' button:

Grade with interactive rubrics

Note: Rubrics must be manually set up in the Dropbox to use them during Grademark. See Creating Interactive Rubrics to learn how to set up a rubric.

1. Tap the 'Pencil' button in the top-right corner or swipe across with one finger to access the Grade Overview:

2. Tap 'Open Rubric':

3. Within the rubric there are 6 categories (Log, Questions, Vocabulary, Reflection, Language, Criterion) that can be used to grade a paper on a scale from Insufficient to Excellent.

Each of these categories and ratings have a detailed description that may be used to determine what grade a paper may fall under.

Tap to select a rating for each category and a % grade will appear at the top:

4. If pleased with this grade, tap 'Apply % to Grade':

5. The grade will now appear on the 'Grade Overview' page. Note: you may change the % grade by tapping 'Edit Grade' and entering in a new % value:

View an originality report

1. Tap the 'OriginalityCheck' button on top right corner:

2. Tap to turn on the source list:

3. Tap a listed report to see a description or tap on the numbered flag of matches highlighted within the paper:

4. Each report will provide a description of the match, and/or the website of the match, and a paragraph of the matching text from said website for comparison:

Note: Many times if the paper was turned in for a prior assignment via Turnitin it will appear as a 100% match to a paper already submitted. Student papers remain the intellectual property of their authors, instructors, and institutions, and a permission request must be made to the author's instructor to view said paper.

1. Tap on the account you want to access. This will give you a list of all of your active classes under this account:

2. Tap on the Class you want to view. This will give you a list of all the assignments from this class:

3. Tap on the assignment you want to view. The main window will update to view the list of students categorized by ungraded, graded, or not submitted and sorted alphabetically:

Note: After opening a paper you can easily navigate between papers by swiping two fingers horizontally across the screen.

Grade offline

Overview: Download papers to Turnitin for iPad to grade anytime even offline. Once the papers are available in Turnitin for iPad they will be available offline and online. Any changes or grade marks made on the iPad will not be available in your Turnitin account until a sync is made. This section will go through the steps to sync Turnitin for iPad with your Turnitin account manually

Note: If your iPad is online (connected to a Network) then it will automatically sync with your Turnitin account.

1. Check to be sure your iPad is online see Using your iOS device with Brockport Wifi.

2. Open Turnitin for iPad.

3. Tap the Sync button at the top right (arrow in circle):

4. Information and Grademarks in Turnitin for iPad should now match those in Turnitin Account.

How To Direct a Student to Access their Turnitin Dropbox Grade

Note: These directions are for students that have submitted an assignment that has been graded via Turnitin. These directions will help to guide students to accessing their grade information.

1. Have the student login to Angel.

2. Have the student open your course.

3. Have the student select the 'Learning Modules' tab:

4. Have the student select the Turnitin drop box that has a graded paper to be reviewed:

5. Have the student tap 'view' next to their submission:

6. The student should now be able to review their grade and grade marks for this assignment.
