What is VPN and why would I use it?

VPN stands for virtual private network and enables a computer to send and receive data as if it was physically located on the Brockport campus. It is an important security layer used to protect Brockport technology resources.

Does Brockport provide remote connectivity to campus technology resources for my College owned laptop?

Yes, VPN access (referred to as OpenVPN) is pre-configured on all College owned laptops. This allows access to Brockport technology resources while off-campus and also allows the College to provide important software updates to your laptop when it is off-campus.

Can I use OpenVPN from a Non-College owned device?

Yes, Non-College owned devices can be configured to use OpenVPN if the device is used to support College business. Requests to use Non-College owned devices should be made through the LITS Help Desk by sending an e-mail to helpdesk@brockport.edu. Please include a list of how many devices and what types you will need to configure as a configuration file is needed for each individual device.

Can I use OpenVPN with my iPad?

Yes, iPad (iOS) devices can be configured to use OpenVPN if the device is used to support College business. Requests to use OpenVPN with iOS devices should be made through the LITS Help Desk by sending an e-mail to helpdesk@brockport.edu. Please include a list of how many devices and what types you will need to configure as a configuration file is needed for each individual device.

What types of devices can use the OpenVPN service?

Windows 7, Windows 8, Mac OS X and iOS (iPad or iPhone) devices can connect to OpenVPN.
