College Affected by Laptop Theft
A laptop belonging to an employee at SunGard Higher Education (www.sungardhe.com), a software company that provides IT services to the State University of New York (SUNY) and many other colleges and universities, was reported stolen on March 13. It is estimated that the laptop contained private information for approximately 1,500 individuals who included SUNY Brockport in their financial aid application process for the 2002-03 academic year. The estimated number of enrolled Brockport students who may be affected is much fewer, but the College is taking immediate steps after being notified about the theft late on April 14 and receiving copies of the compromised files on April 17.
The security of all personal information is paramount to the College. “The College is taking every measure to identify the affected individuals and inform them of this situation. We understand the frustration and anxiety that this may cause for people in our community,” says Frank Wojcik, Dean for Information Resources and Chief Information Officer at the College. “The Information Technology Services staff has been working around the clock to assess the compromised files and verify the personal information they contain.”
The theft was reported to law enforcement immediately but the laptop has not been recovered. According to its corporate website, SunGard believes that the laptop was stolen for hardware rather than data.
As soon as the College confirms the identities of the affected individuals, they will be contacted by mail. Additional information about the laptop theft can be found at www.brockport.edu/laptoptheft. New information will be posted as it becomes available.
SunGard has set up a website at www.sungardhe.com/laptoptheft and will also offer affected individuals a full year of free credit monitoring service through TripleAlert (SM).
Additional information about identity protection can be found at http://www.idtheftcenter.org.
