Chengdu Quake Survivors will Attend The College at Brockport
SUNY “China 150” Program Provides Full Scholarships for Chinese Students
Brockport, NY – The massive earthquakes that struck Chengdu, China in mid-May devastated the lives of millions. Thanks to SUNY’s “China 150” initiative, 150 displaced Chinese undergraduate college students will continue their education at the State University of New York this fall, with four arriving at The College at Brockport in mid-August. This SUNY program includes full tuition and room and board.
“We are very pleased to be part of this important SUNY humanitarian initiative, which is in keeping with SUNY’s long history of outreach to China and other nations. Hosting four students displaced by the Chengdu tragedy will allow them to continue their education and to be able to return with greater skills to assist their region,” said John R. Halstead, president of The College at Brockport.
The four students from Sichuan Province coming to The College at Brockport include:
Wen Yan, a political science major from Dujiangyan City;
Da Fang, an English major from Shifang City;
Xu Lei, an English major from Shifang City;
He Ting, an English Major from Dujiangyan City.
The four students will be included in one of the College’s new learning communities, “The Global Village,” a joint academic and student life program designed to foster cross-cultural understanding. They will be among the group of 40 students sharing an interest in international and intercultural issues who will be living in the McLean residence hall. They will work closely with faculty members who teach classes in related disciplines and participate in a wide range of internationally focused events including festivals, performing arts events and off-campus visits to the Public Market, museums and restaurants, in addition to their academic courses.
Juanita Suarez, associate professor of dance, was teaching in nearby Dujiangyan, 15 miles south of the epicenter when the earthquake struck. She relocated to Chengdu shortly following the quake and returned to Brockport on May 30. “I saw courage during the quake and the pride of the people as they rose to meet the challenge of the quake. I look forward to meeting the students when they arrive,” she said.
