Exhibition Celebrates 40 Years of the Visual Studies Workshop
Archive: From the Soibelman Collection
John Wood: On the Edge of Clear Meaning: Eagle Pelt by John Wood
Brockport, NY – As the initial exhibition in what will be a yearlong celebration, The College at Brockport’s, State University of New York, Tower Fine Arts Gallery will present Archive: 40 Years of the Visual Studies Workshop. The exhibit will run from September 3 through October 7, 2008. The Gallery, located at 180 Holley Street, Brockport, will host an opening reception on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at 5 pm.
Founded by Nathan Lyons in 1969, Rochester’s Visual Studies Workshop has built an archive of artists’ books, photographs, film and video, and various printed ephemera. The collections of the VSW represent an age of exploratory advancement and oft-times provocative visual phenomena. Tate Shaw, interim executive director of the VSW says, “At VSW we have over one million images. Our job is to keep these images so people may visit our collection and discover the potential of the archive for themselves. This exhibition is evidence of the archive's possibilities."
In addition to this exhibition, the VSW offers diversified programming in education and exhibitions in its own Gallery, located at 31 Prince Street, Rochester. The VSW also publishes a journal of media arts and cultural criticism, and an extensive series of artists’ books, as well as serving as a site for the production of artworks and for scholarly research.
The College at Brockport’s professional alliance with the VSW is a unique alliance between public and private institutions, providing numerous opportunities for students at the College to enjoy the benefits of this internationally recognized center for media studies, including photography, visual books, digital imaging, film and video. A master of fine arts in visual studies is offered through a joint program.
In yet another unique arrangement, following the opening of Archive, the VSW will be one of three area galleries celebrating the photography of John Wood in an exhibition, On the Edge of Clear Meaning. Wood is one of the pre-eminent artists and educators of our time. Known as an artist’s artist, Wood is a master of processes from straight photography, collage, cliché verre, solarization, mixed media, offset lithography to drawing. This large-scale exhibition opens at the Visual Studies Workshop’s Siskind Gallery on October 17, and runs through January 17, 2009. Concurrent installations at George Eastman House and the Memorial Art Gallery will offer exhibitions of Wood’s photographs and paintings, drawings and sculptures in this collaborative effort.
