Brockport, NY – The massive earthquakes that struck Chengdu, China in mid-May devastated millions of lives. Thanks to SUNY’s “China 150” initiative, 150 displaced Chinese undergraduate college students continue their education at the State University of New York this fall, with four here at The College at Brockport.

They are:

  • Yan Wen, a political science major from Dujiangyan City;
  • Fang Da, an English major from Shifang City;
  • Lei Xu, an English major from Shifang City;
  • Ting He, an English major from Dujiangyan City.

They were no sooner unpacked when the local Rochester area media interviewed them. R-News, WROC-TV, and the Democrat and Chronicle spent time recently gathering the students impressions of the US and the College at Brockport campus as well as asking about their experiences during and after the earthquake.

The four students will be included in one of the College’s two new learning communities, “The Global Village,” a joint academic and student life program designed to foster cross-cultural understanding. They will be among the group of 40 students living in the McLean residence hall, who share an interest in international and intercultural issues. They will be working closely with faculty members who teach classes in related disciplines and participate in a wide range of internationally focused events including festivals, performing arts events and off-campus visits to the Public Market, museums and restaurants.
