Brockport, NY – The Buffalo Broadcasters Association has awarded its inaugural Tim Russert Young Broadcaster Medal of Merit to Amanda Hartman, a2008 graduate of The College at Brockport, State University of New York.

The award, established by the Buffalo Broadcasting Association following the untimely death on June 13 of journalist and Buffalo native Tim Russert, recognizes an outstanding student of broadcasting and/or journalism from a Western New York college. “It’s an unbelievable honor to receive this award. I will work hard to live up to Tim Russert’s standards of excellence. It’s a lot to live up to,” Hartman said.

Hartman will receive the award along with a $1,000 cash prize at this year’s Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame Dinner on September 23.

“Amanda became involved with our TV club and quickly became our news director, creating workshops to teach the students how to write stories, shoot, edit, and create graphics. Amanda approached her role with considerable professionalism and behaved as a news director should. Her work ethic, high standards, quality leadership, humility, and character clearly suggest that she is a great fit for an award named after Tim Russert,” said Joseph Chesbro, associate professor of communication at The College at Brockport.

While a student at The College at Brockport, Hartman was among the first group of students hired by the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle newspaper to launch its RocLoop Web site. She also worked as an intern in the College’s Office of Marketing Communications. She is currently attending S.I.Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University where she is enrolled in the Goldring Arts Journalism program.
