Eighty-five New Citizens To Take Oath at The College at Brockport
Celebrating Citizenship Day on September 17
Brockport, NY – Citizenship Day will be a day of celebration for 85 soon-to-be US citizens from Rochester and Western NY when they take the formal Oath of Allegiance during naturalization ceremonies at The College at Brockport on Wednesday, September 17, at 10:45 am, in the Seymour College Union Ballroom. The public is invited to attend.
The ceremony will be presided over by US Magistrate Judge Jonathan W. Feldman of the US District Court for the Western District of NY, who will administer the Oath of Allegiance.
The new citizens, along with their families and friends, will be welcomed by College at Brockport President John R. Halstead. The College’s ROTC Color Guard and the College at Brockport Choir will perform.
Citizenship Day
Every September 17, Citizenship Day, also called Constitution Day, is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the ratification of the US Constitution. This newest of federal holidays was established by Congress in 2004. The Act that passed the holiday also states that federally funded schools are required to provide lessons on the US Constitution during the holiday.
American Democracy Project
The Citizenship Day naturalization ceremony is sponsored by the College at Brockport’s American Democracy Project (ADP) committee. ADP is a multi-campus initiative focused on higher education’s role in preparing the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for our democracy. The project began in 2003 as an initiative of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), in partnership with The New York Times.
