Poet Denise Duhamel to Speak

Brockport, NY – Poet Denise Duhamel will be the next guest of The College at Brockport’s Fall ’08 Writers Forum lecture series, Wednesday, October 8, at 8 pm, in the New York Room, Cooper Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.

Duhamel’s most recent book, Two and Two (2005) was the winner of Binghamton University’s Milt Kessler Book Award. Her other titles include Mille et un Sentiments (2005), Queen for a Day: Selected and New Poems (2001), The Star-Spangled Banner (1999), and Kinky (1997).

She also co-edited, with Maureen Seaton and David Trinidad, Saints of Hysteria: A Half-Century of Collaborative American Poetry (2007). A bilingual edition of her poems, Afortunada de mí (Lucky Me), translated into Spanish by Dagmar Buchholz and David Gonzalez, is forthcoming in 2009.

Duhamel has read her work on NPR and as a featured poet on the PBS special Fooling with Words, hosted by Bill Moyers. She is an associate professor of English at Florida International University in Miami.

Wang Ping is a fiction writer and poet. She is the author of The Last Communist Virgin, The Magic Whip, Of Flesh and Spirit, Foreign Devil and her nonfiction book, Aching for Beauty: Foot Binding in China. She also has written a children’s book, The Dragon Emperor. Originally from Shanghai, she is currently on the faculty of Macalaster College.

Ted Kooser is the 13th Poet Laureate of the United States. He is the author of 12 books of poetry and received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his book, Delights & Shadows. The Writer’s Voice Lecture is the featured event of the each fall’s Writers Forum program.

*All readings held on the SUNY Brockport campus, in the New York Room, Cooper Hall, at 8 pm, unless otherwise noted.

Founded in 1967, the Brockport Writers Forum is recognized as one of the outstanding series of readings in this country. Its guests have included many distinguished poets, writers and critics.
