Graduate Student Choreography Highlighted in DANCE/Hartwell
Brockport, NY — The College at Brockport’s Department of Dance will present DANCE/Hartwell featuring MFA thesis work choreographed by Crystal K. Malone and Kelly Kavanaugh. Performances begin Thursday, October 23, 2008, at 7:30 pm and continue on Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25 at the same time. The concerts take place in the Hartwell Dance Theater, Kenyon Street, on the Brockport campus.
Crystal K. Malone is a recipient of the Graduate Diversity Fellowship Award, Strasser-Pylyshenko Outstanding Graduate Student Award, The College at Brockport Department of Dance Summer Study Scholarship, and an Urban Bush Women Summer Institute Scholarship. Through her choreography, Malone questions how the voices of people are negotiated in a democratic society, who is heard and who is silenced, and what responsibility individuals have in making their voices heard.
Kelly Kavanaugh, the second MFA candidate whose thesis work will be shown, will present her choreographic response to her personal research of cultural identity and performance. Her choreography reflects the cast’s individual identities, set to an Afro-beat and jazz score. Kavanaugh has acted as both choreographer and assistant to the choreographer for the Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble and was awarded a Graduate Teaching Assistantship position in the Department of Dance.
Other works in this concert are newly created modern dance pieces by graduate and undergraduate choreographers selected by an adjudication committee which included students and faculty coordinators Anne Burnidge and James Hansen. In choosing pieces, the committee looked for original ideas, inventive movement vocabulary and diverse approaches to modern dance. Tickets are $12 for general public, $10/Seniors, College at Brockport Faculty and Staff and $8/Students and are available by phone at (585) 395-ARTS or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Tickets may also be available at the Box Office in Hartwell Hall one hour prior to each performance.
